While many celebrated as the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, an 86-year-old grandmother was violently woken and raped.
A 49-year-old accused was due to appear in the Willowvale Magistrates’ Court on Monday, January 16, said Butterworth police spokesman Captain Jackson Manatha.
Manatha said the victim woke at midnight to find “a man in her bed already raping her.” It was midnight, he said.
In a separate matter, police arrested a rape suspect who has been on the run since August.
The 31-year-old accused of assaulting and raped a 21-year-old woman after she turned down his proposal to have sex.
The man from Rwantsini Location at Taleni Village in Dutywa was arrested by members of the Butterworth Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).
Manatha said: “The suspect arrived at the homestead where the victim was alone on August 5 2016 at about 7pm. The suspect is alleged to have tried to persuade the victim to fall in love with him. The request was turned down. He then started to assault the victim and raped her.”
Meanwhile the police in Port Alfred staged a raid over the weekend that led to the arrest of several suspects who face charges ranging from drunk driving, drugs, house breaking, theft, possession of suspected stolen property.
Grahamstown police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender: “A vehicle that was used to commit a crime was also seized. Groceries to the value of R1800 were also recovered.”
Govender said the suspects would appear in the Port Alfred Magistrates Court on Monday, January 16.
